Private sport fishing charters out of South Maui’s Ma’alaea Harbor aboard HINATEA III!
Hinatea II was lost in the August ’23 fire which destroyed Lahaina Harbor, but the company got back in action quickly. 
Hinatea Sportfishing has resumed charters out of Maalaea Harbor. They will return to Lahaina once the harbor has been reconstructed.
Hinatea III is a 34′ Blackfin operating private and shared sport fishing charters tMonday through Friday (closed weekends). Typical check-in time is 5:15am.
Enjoy the scenery from Hinatea III’s spacious back deck, as you make your way further offshore to Maui’s more productive fishing grounds. Her cabin is equipped with an electric head (toilet), a galley with a refrigerator, a fresh-water sink, a large table, and cushioned bench seating. There is additional cushioned seating just outside the cabin, plus bench seating on the flybridge, forward of the captain.
Fish caught aboard Hinatea Sportfishing include striped and blue marlin, mahi mahi (dorado/dolphin fish), ono (wahoo), ahi (yellowfin tuna), big-eye, and aku (skipjack tuna).
In addition to trolling with artificial lures, Hinatea’s crew love to catch and rig live bait. This can bring in uku (gray snapper/jobfish), ulua (GT), trevally, rainbow runner, barracuda and more.
The fishing methods used on any given day depend upon a variety of factors, most notably season (live bait is more difficult to obtain during the summer), trip duration, weather conditions, and the previous day’s bite.
Probably the most consistent comments we receive about Hinatea Sportfishing have to do with her captain and crew. Captain Terry Kellem (a.k.a. “Killer”) has been sport fishing off Maui for decades. He and his deckhand share the Aloha Spirit at every opportunity. They love what they do, and they are genuinely pleased to have you on board!

Highlight of our trip
When I came to Hawaii 10 years ago I wanted to go deep sea sport fishing but wasn't in the cards. This time I made sure to book a trip. It was tough to select a charter but glad I went with the hinatea. The captain, Killer, and Adam made the trip so enjoyable. They are both down to earth, experienced in the maui waters, and want everyone to have a good time. They made it an unforgettable experience and trill of a lifetime. We were able to reel in two stripped marlin and an ono. Highly recommend booking with them.
Perfect day!!
Adam and captain Killer were the best crew we could have asked for! We were out on the waters for 8 hours and only caught 1 fish but they kept us entertained for the whole trip. They made sure we were involved in the fishing for each hour and we were never bored which is something to say for an 8 hour trip! The boat was super clean and they were both very polite and answered all of our questions. Would recommend the Hinatea II and we will definitely be going back to fish with them again!!
Awesome trip
Man, I cannot say enough about Captain Chris. They are nothing but top Notch on the boat. We have been out with him 3 times, Catching fish 2 outa the 3. This last time Chris and the deckhand B worked extra hard to get us on fish. We hooked up and landed a 340lb blue marlin. I will be booking a trip with Him every time we are in Maui. Great Fishing Day
We had the best time on this boat and with this crew. Chris and Dana were awesome! For the first four hours, it was kind of quiet, but we did see a bunch of dolphins! Then in the 5th hour, we caught 6! We had a triple bite-two mahi and a wahoo. Such a great experience! I would recommend these guys for a perfect day of fishing!
What a trip!!
These guys were top notch! Greg and Dana did everything to put us on fish and it paid off. My dad and I were able to land 4 ono, but one of them was an almost 50 pound ono! These guys are knowledgeable and a good crew to be around!
Great experience, great trip
Coming from the Mediterranean (GREECE) I have been fishing since I was a kid. This trip however and fishing in the Pacific Ocean with Hinatea was a unbelievable experience. The colors of the sky at dawn, the sound of the whales around us and the beautiful views of the Maui mountains as the sun was rising, was something I will always remember and cherish. All this combined with a great boat and a very professional crew (Captain Chris and Lucas), made it a superb trip. We caught one 20lb Mahi and two 6-7lb blue Taralis, which we ate for lunch a couple of hours after we returned. Awsome experience all together. Thank you Hinatea and crew!

Excellent Trip
A great experience from start to finish. Chris knows what he is doing and they work extremely hard to get the fish. We didn't get a Marlin strike, but caught 7 nice Mahi-Mahi for the day. I took enough home to feed the group and everyone loved the way Chris told me to prepare it. It's fishing, so nothing is guaranteed, but they will do everything they can to get you some action. Awsome trip
I planed this trip with my son and a couple of friends with no expectations but hoping for some good fishing. Chris was awsome at getting us on some fish . Although we only landed 2 Mahi Mahi. It was well worth the trip. Dana his deck hand was constantly changing baits trying to get some strikes . Couldn’t be happier with our trip. Watching my son reel in his first larger game fish was worth every penny.

We had an amazing time! Jason and Chris went out of their way to help us catch fish and we did! Two Ono's and one Amberjack! They were very accommodating and couldn't be nicer. They were very friendly and great to visit with. They were obviously very experienced and it was even very interesting watching change lures and tying knots. They hustled the whole time. We got to take how ever much fish we wanted and it was delicious! Highly recommend them!
