Captain Jon Keiley has been fishing off Maui since he was a child. He was one of the most sought after captains on the island prior to the Lahaina Fire in 2023 when he owned and operated Automatic Sportfishing. At that time he specialized in full-day, early morning “buoy trips” targeting mahi mahi and ahi.
But Jon has set a different path for his new 29′ Topaz ”Malia“. Instead of an “Oh-Dark-30” departure, Malia leaves at a far more reasonable 5:30-6:00am. They offer 4 and 6 hour private fishing charters which can include both sport fishing and bottom fishing, however we recommend always deferring to the captain as to most effective fishing style on any given day.
Every fishing charter is different, but typically, private parties of up to 4 guests will be trolling for pelagic species like mahi mahi, ono, ahi, and billfish, then enjoy some nearshore drift fishing with lighter tackle targeting a variety of snapper, trevally, jacks, goatfish and more. Live bait may be employed on 6-hour trips (Oct-May). Combo fishing charters keep things interesting! These fishing charters are ideal for both experienced anglers, and smaller families with school-aged children (ages 8+).
At the end of every charter, your crew will clean and cut a portion of the day’s catch for you to enjoy while you’re on the island. Generally, they’ll give you as much as you feel you can reasonably eat while you’re here.
