Spear fishing is a relatively new ocean activity for Maui – at least as far as the tourist industry goes. Of course, Hawaiian free-diving and spearfishing have been around ever since humans began sharpening sticks and venturing out into the water.
Traditional spear fishing is usually done in shallow waters without any additional breathing apparatus beyond a mask and snorkel. Just freediving. You might not think you’re capable of holding your breath long enough, but after a bit of instruction from the experts out here you’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish!
On a Maui spearfishing adventure you’ll be hunting some of the very same fish caught on a typical bottomfishing charter. Omilu, ulua (giant travally), milkfish (Awa) and larger snapper (Uku) are all highly prized fighters. There’s also various goatfish (Moana), unicorn fish etc. You’re welcome to keep any suitable fish for a nice meal that night. You will also be helping our reefs by specifically targeting some of the more invasive species of fish like Bluestripe Snapper (Ta’ape), Blacktail Snapper (To’au), and the notorious Peacock Grouper (Roi).
Recommended Maui Spearfishing Guides
There are two professional spearfishing operations currently offering tours on Maui – Spearfish Maui, and Maui Spearfishing academy. Both are at the top of their game in terms of fishing experience, and both are enthusiastic educators as well.
Maui Spearfishing Academy
Maui Spearfishing Academy places a strong emphasis on preserving our Hawaiian reefs. In addition to hunting for your dinner, you will instructed on how to recognize and ultimately bag specific invasive species which are threatening our delicate marine ecosystem.
