Maui’s fishing opportunities aren’t limited to bottom and sport fishing charters. Hawaiian fishing styles range from the ancient art of hukilau (net throwing), to shorefishing – beach casting/whipping/dunking. Anglers fishing from the beach, rocky outcroppings and harbor entrances are a common site here. There are also Maui spearfishing and kayak fishing adventures – even overnights – for those looking to expand their saltwater fishing experiences!
Deep Sea Sport Fishing / Trolling
Deepsea sportfishing is the most popular form of fishing on Maui. Leave early. Fish 6-8 hours. Troll the waters in search of trophy fish or unmatched food fare! Ahi, ono, mahi mahi and marlin are the focus.
Bottom fishing
“Now hold it out in front of you so it looks bigger!!” Bottom fishing usually produces smaller fish under 3 pounds. 4 hours is enough time. 95% are inshore trips. Most leave from Maalaea harbor. Snapper, travally, ulua, barracuda, shark… you never know what’s gonna bite down there!
Shore Fishing / Casting
“Yes, Virginia, there is some fun shore, beach and reef fishing on Maui!” Can’t fit a day of charter boat fishing into your Maui vacation schedule? You can always try fishing from shore. You won’t find any halibut here, but we do have a few bonefish and other coveted species that any game fisherman would be proud to land.
Spearfishing
For those of you who ever wanted an introduction into the amazing sport of spearfishing, now’s your chance. There are guides on Maui offering both introductory dives as well as adventures for more experienced spearfishermen. You will need to be comfortable in the water for an extended period of time and preferably have snorkeled before.
